Cooking a frozen flank steak in an Instant Pot might seem like a daunting task, but it’s actually quite simple and can produce a tender and flavorful result. Here’s how you can do it:

  • 1 frozen flank steak (approximately 2 pounds)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Step 1: Prepare the Flank Steak

Before cooking the frozen flank steak in the Instant Pot, you need to prepare it properly. Start by trimming any excess fat from the edges of the steak.

Note: If your flank steak is too large for your Instant Pot, you can cut it in half to fit.

Step 2: Season the Flank Steak

In a small bowl, mix together garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt and pepper. Rub this seasoning mixture all over the frozen flank steak.

Step 3: Add Olive Oil to Instant Pot and Sear Flank Steak

Turn on your Instant Pot and select “Saut√©” mode. Once hot, add olive oil to the pot. When the oil is shimmering hot, add the seasoned flank steak and sear each side for about 2-3 minutes until browned.

Note: Searing helps to lock in flavor and juices.

Step 4: Pressure Cook Flank Steak

Once seared on both sides, remove the flank steak from the Instant Pot and pour in beef broth. Place the trivet into the pot and return the flank steak to the Instant Pot, placing it on top of the trivet.

Close the Instant Pot lid and make sure the steam release valve is set to “Sealing”. Select “Manual” mode and set the timer for 90 minutes.

Step 5: Natural Release

Once the timer goes off, let the pressure release naturally for 10-15 minutes. This allows for a more tender flank steak as it allows for a gradual decrease in pressure.

Step 6: Serve

Open your Instant Pot by turning the steam release valve to “Venting”. Once all of the steam has been released, carefully remove your cooked flank steak from your Instant Pot. Let it rest for a few minutes before slicing against the grain.

Tip: Slicing against the grain ensures that you have tender slices of meat as it breaks up muscle fibers.

Serve and enjoy!
